MEDICAL AND DENTAL COUNCIL

The council was established through the “ THE MEDICAL AND DENTAL PRACTITIONERS ACT OF 1970” and was commenced on the 9th of january 1970 There have been several ammendments to the act since then. Ammended to incorporate para medical practitioners( Allied health care professionals) on 31st March 1972 Other ammendments were done in 1994, SMDC is a member of AMCOA (Association of Medical Councils of Africa) IAMRA( International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities) and SADC-MRA ( Southern African Development Community Medical Regulatory Association.

MEDICAL INTERNSHIP

Internship is a period of supervised practical experience / training, for medical/ dental graduates when they serve in the hospitals for specified periods before registration. During this period, the graduates have an opportunity to consolidate their knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to be competent practitioners.

Every medical intern shall be required to undergo an internship training program for a period of two years on a rotational basis in all important medical disciplines according to International standards.

They are registered as medical interns and are given the full registration as General medical Practitioners/medical officers after successful completion of the internship and the Pre-Registration Examinations This is the international standard of the progression of the medical cadre.

INTERNSHIP GOALS

The interns shall be able to:-

  •   Consolidate their knowledge, skills and attitudes to enable them to be competent medical or dental practitioners.
  •   Acquire knowledge of commonly used drugs and their rational use, be conversant with the National Essential Drugs List and know the Dangerous Drugs & Poisons Act and its application.
  •   Utilize the current Ministry of Health Standard Treatment Guidelines in patient management and get accustomed to national and international policies and guidelines and standards of care.
  •   Maintaining ethical standards in Professional Practice

  • Responsibilities will be outlined to them by the Intern coordinator or the Clinical heads of the Department as stipulated in the intern regulations and log book issued by the SMDC

    INTERNSHIP ROTATION

    A period of 24 month clinical rotations is required according to the SADC/International standards. Clinical skills should be gained in the following disciplines.

  •   General Surgery 4 months.
  •   Internal Medicine 4 months.
  •   Obstetrics and Gynaecology 4 months.
  •   Paediatrics and child Health 4 months.
  •   Primary health care/Mental health/HIV management/Ophthalmology/Neuro Surgery/ENT; 4 months
  •   Anaesthesia/critical care; 2 months.
  •   Orthopaedics; 2 months.

  • The exact clinical skills and procedures to be learnt, together with medical ethical standards are formulated in the Intern log book. After successful completion of each rotation, the log book has to be signed off by the head of the Department and after completion of all rotations; the internship certificate should be signed by the Senior Medical Officer.The medical internship program and the clinical skills log book is developed according to International standards by the SMDC.

    PROCESS OF INTERNSHIP

    A period of 24 month clinical rotations is required according to the SADC/International standards. Clinical skills should be gained in the following disciplines.

  •   Application to join internship sent to Director of Health Services –open only for Swazi nationals.
  •   Submission of all necessary documents to SMDC for screening of credentials including the ECFMG verification of credentials.
  •   Provisional registration issued before beginning of medical internship programme.
  •   Posting done in collaboration between Directorate of Health services and SMDC.
  •   After successful completion of 24 months – internship completion form submitted to SMDC
  •   Registration issued as General Medical Practitioner after successful completion of the Pre-Registration Examination
